Permanent Hair Removal, Explained Honestly

A licensed electrologist inserts a very fine sterile probe alongside each hair, into the follicle opening. A precisely controlled current is delivered to the base of the follicle, disabling its ability to produce a new hair. The treated hair slides out, and that follicle is finished.

Three modalities are used, sometimes in combination: galvanic (chemical), thermolysis (heat), and blend (both together). Your electrologist selects the modality that best fits your hair type and skin. Electrolysis has been performed in the United States since the 1870s and remains the only method with permanent-removal clearance.

Yes. The FDA permits only electrolysis to be marketed as permanent hair removal. Laser is cleared as permanent hair reduction — it places follicles into dormancy rather than fully eliminating every one. Follicles treated with electrolysis do not regrow.

Hormonal conditions such as PMOS (formerly PCOS) and perimenopause can activate new follicles over time, which is why treatment plans account for regrowth cycles. Every follicle treated is finished — and any newly activated ones are treated as they appear.

Laser needs pigment to work, so grey, white, blonde, red, and fine vellus hair are effectively invisible to it — which is why people are often told they are no longer candidates. Electrolysis targets the follicle itself, so hair color is irrelevant. This is the most common reason clients arrive here after laser, including men with grey and white beard hair.

Typical facial clearance takes 12–18 months, with visits that start frequent and space out over time. Hair grows in cycles and each follicle must be treated in its active phase, which is why clearance is measured in months of sessions, not weeks. Larger areas and denser hair take longer; your personalized plan is built at your consultation.

Electrolysis follows the hair growth cycle, so visits are frequent at first and then space out as follicles are permanently cleared.

• First 3 months — every two weeks. This is the clearing phase, where we work through the hair that’s currently active.
• Months 3–6 — monthly, as regrowth slows and sessions get shorter.
• Months 6–12 — every two months, targeting follicles entering their active phase on a longer cycle.
• Beyond 12 months — every three months, until we’re seeing no new growth.

Most clients are in this rhythm for 12 to 18 months. Hormones and genetics move the timeline in both directions, and we’ll adjust the spacing based on what your hair is actually doing rather than a fixed schedule.

Sensation is typically described as a brief warmth or pinprick.
