Chin Hairs After 40: The Perimenopause Hair Nobody Warns You About

Sudden facial hair in your 40s — a coarse hair on the chin, along the jaw, at the corner of the mouth — is almost always perimenopause. As estrogen declines relative to androgens, fine vellus hairs on the face can convert into thicker terminal hairs. It's extremely common, it isn't your fault, and electrolysis removes it permanently.

Why this happens in your 40s and 50s

During perimenopause and menopause, estrogen production slows while androgen levels stay relatively steady. That shift in ratio is enough to change how facial follicles behave. Genetics also matter — if your mother or grandmother had similar chin hairs, you're more likely to as well.

This is why so many people are told 'you're imagining it' or 'that's just aging' and then discover the change is very real. It's hormonal. It's biological. And it's not something willpower or a better cleanser will resolve.

Why tweezing feels endless

Tweezing removes the visible hair for a few days, then the same follicle re-grows the same hair. Repeated plucking can distort the follicle, making the hair curve back into the skin and cause ingrowns. It can also stimulate the follicle to grow a slightly coarser hair over time.

None of this means you've made anything worse — everyone tweezes. But it does mean the cycle only ends when the follicle itself is eliminated.

Why electrolysis is the honest answer for facial hair

Facial hair in women is often mixed: some grey, some fine, some coarse and dark. Laser targets pigment and does its best work on dark hair against lighter skin — it cannot see grey, blonde, red, or very fine hair. Electrolysis doesn't rely on pigment at all: it eliminates the follicle directly, one at a time, regardless of hair color.

For most clients treating chin, upper lip, or jawline, 30-minute sessions every 2–4 weeks over 9–15 months brings the area into maintenance. Sessions are short, discreet, and scheduled around real life — many clients come in on Saturdays or after work.

Discretion is a standard, not a favor

At Wurayo, the studio is a private suite, not an open salon floor. Booking, intake, and records are handled discreetly. Many clients come in for years and never mention it to anyone in their life — and never need to. The point is not the story; the point is the result.
